New Mission Wins Division 2 EMass Championship

In a game filled with the emotions of playing for the division 2 Eastern Mass championship, facing up against a former teammate, and playing in front of friends and family in the TD Bank North Garden its was natural for the kids to come out a little nervous. A low scoring first quarter it seemed as if both teams needed time to get into a true rhythm.

Once the 2nd quarter got under way both teams seemed to settle down, as both New Mission and Milton found ways to exploit one another’s advantages. New Mission did a great job of finding big man Frederick “Bam” Rivers down in the post, as he was able to pull of 9 of his total 13pts in the quarter. Shaquan Naerem also came up big in the quarter scoring 7pts. Milton on the other hand chose to go to their guards Keyon Jones and Juwan Gooding who was able to use their speed and craftiness to get to the rim when they wanted. New Mission ended the half with a small lead up 37 to 32 heading into the locker room.

In the 3rd quarter both coaches did a great job of making the proper adjustments to take away the advantage exploited by one another’s teams weak spot. To slow down New Mission in the post coach Sean Lopresti decided to mix it up, going in and out of a 2-3 zone to throw New Mission off. Allowing NMHS to score just 10pts for the quarter. To slow down Milton’s guards, NMHS coach Corey McCarthy went from straight man to man, to playing man with help defense. Milton ended the quarter down 42-48.

After a slow start NMHS senior Shaquan Murray would take over, becoming the team’s primary scorer in the 4th scoring 10 of the teams 23 4th quarter points. Not to be out done, it seemed as if Junior Milton guard Juwan Gooding would lead the surge for another Milton magical 4th quarter come backs, scoring 10 of the teams 21 points for the quarter. In the end it wasn’t enough, as New Mission would go on to win the Division 2 Eastern Mass Championship 71-63.

Leading NMHS was seniors Shaquan Murray 18pts, Frederick “Bam” Rivers 13pts 12 rebs, and Asante Sandiford 11pts 11rebs 4ast. For Milton in the loss was lead by Juwan Gooding 17pts 4ast, Myles McDermott 12pts 6rebs and Keyon Jones who finished with 18pts.
