North Quincy Moves Past Newton South

North Quicy 67 Newton South 66

This one felt like a prizefight, contenders going blow for blow as each team struggled to pull away from one another through out. Early in the game it seemed as if Newton South (11-10) came out wanting to prove they were better then their record indicated, ending the 1st quarter up 8 over N. Quincy. Senior Phil Levine-Caleb seemed unstable, scoring 9 of the teams 18 1st quarter points.

In the 2nd quarter coach Barrett made a key substitution that seemed to ignite the Raiders, bringing in high-energy guard Jackie Chen. Chen opened the quarter with a big 3 and was all over the Newton South guards. The Raiders went on 12-0 run not allowing South to score their first 2nd quarter basket until 4:32, on a made layup. N. Quincy ended the half up 37-28 holding a hot Phil Levine-Caleb scoreless in the quarter.

In the 2nd half both teams came out their corners swinging, as they went basket for basket neither team giving any ground. Junior Geoff Gray came alive in the 3rd quarter for South, scoring 5 of his 10pts in the last minute of the 3rd to put his team up 47-46 heading into the 4th.

The game stayed close through the 4th as each team was unable to pull away for more then 2pts, setting up a thrilling ending. With 33.1 seconds left in game North Quincy held a 67-66 lead, South senior Mark Karmiy forces a turnover. Now with possession South winds the clock down to 18.2 seconds before Phil Leivine-Caleb is called for a moving screen. Phil then redeems him self by stealing the ball at the 16.7 second mark, and calls a timeout. Newton South inbounds the ball, and ball is swung to Phil who drives baseline and the ball is stolen by Jackie Chen who scores a break away layup. The refs wave the basket off, calling the steal a kick ball, 5 seconds is put back on the clock giving South another chance. South inbounds the ball and N. Quincy Kyle Richardson comes up with a big steal to seal the game 67-66.
