Rivers School Basketball Team Preview 2013-14

After missing out in last year’s Class B post-season, coach Andrew Mirken team is back to change things. Lead by seniors Carlin Haymon and Matt Prokap this Rivers team may be one of the most talented teams the school has seen in years past. The team has a nice balance of young talent to go along with veteran upperclassmen.

5’9 PG Carlin Haymon is the team general, as he goes so will the team. A battle tested point guard, Carlin likes to push the tempo either looking for his teammates or finishing him self at the rim.  In the half court he’s very strong with the ball in his hands, he posse’s such good feel for the game, which allows for good things to happen.

6’5 Matt Prokap does it all for his team. He is an energy guy who rebounds, defends, and can score a number of ways.  Prokap isn’t afraid to go down low and battle with bigs or stretch out to the perimeter and match up with guards.

In the front court for this years team will be 6’7 sophomore Ross Carter, stretch four Andrew Kaufmann, 6’3 Hans Gabriel, 6’3 senior Steve Carangelo, and the talented freshman Jermaine Samuels.  The number one rated freshman in our rankings, Jermaine comes into the season with a lot of hype.

A true freshman Samuels posses a lot skill, standing at 6’6 he is athletic, can put the ball on the floor, and has added a nice mid range game to his arsenal. Samuels already posses a number of high major offers before his first official high school season.

In the backcourt will be speedy guard Jermari Venter, Justin Lei, Jacquan Mills, crafty senior Kevin Hester, and true freshman Azar Swain. Playing with one of the most talented 8th grade AAU teams this summer (Expressions) swain looks like he has grown an inch or two. He now stands at 5’9 and has added some muscle mass. Once known mostly for his shooting ability, Swain has added more to his game. He has transitioned more into a point guard role, and has become more aggressive attacking the basket. Azar posses’ great patient to his game and is very dangerous in the pick and roll.

Not present during our visit: Sr Steve Carangelo, Soph Justin Leip

This season Rivers will participate in the Hoop Dreams Magazine Prep Classic (January 11-12, 2014) at Tufts University.
